Carol McShane, RN, MS


Carol McShane has been president and clinical director of Nebraska Nursing Consultants since its founding in 1991. Now semi-retired, she continues to consult while concentrating on the clinical and business aspects of the registry.
A nurse since 1962, Carol's experience has been in nursing education, home health care, gerontology, nutrition, public health, and hospice.
Carol is a member of the National Association of Professional Geriatric Care Managers; the honorary nursing society, Sigma Theta Tau; the American and Nebraska Nurses Association; the Public Health Association of Nebraska; and the National Association of Holistic Nurses.
Carol's Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree is from Georgetown University in Washington, DC. She received a Master of Science degree in human nutrition from University of Nebraska Lincoln and another Master of Science degree in nursing, with emphasis in gerontology and education from Creighton University in Omaha, NE.
Carol and Jim have seven grown children and five grandchildren. Carol, a community activist, also gardens, quilts, and likes Pilates exercise.
Pat Connor, RN, BSN
Pat Connor is a Consultant and Care Manager with Nebraska Nursing Consultants. She is based in Lincoln.
An RN since 1966, Pat's career has been packed with a variety of challenging experiences in orthopedic, occupational, emergency room and, most recently, rehabilitation nursing. We honor Pat's experience and her expertise.
Pat has been in private practice with Nebraska Nursing Consultants since 2000—the longest of all our RNs. Her clients appreciate her expertise and her calming reassurance. We value her experience and her nursing perspective.
Pat received her RN diploma from Mary Lanning Hospital School of Nursing in Hastings, NE. Her Bachelor of Science in Nursing is from Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln, NE.
Pat has three grown children and seven grandchildren. She's an avid walker, bicyclist, reader and bridge player. She's a volunteer on the telephone hotline for the local abuse crisis center, is active in her church, and enjoys, above all, being "Grandma Pat" to her grandchildren.
Barbara McCabe, RN, PhD

Barbara W. McCabe, RN, PhD is a Consultant and Care Manager with Nebraska Nursing Consultants. She is based in Lincoln.
Barbara is Board Certified and licensed as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) Clinical Nurse Specialist in gerontological nursing. She has been an educator at the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Nursing and an elder care consultant who focuses on wellness. She has also worked extensively with people with dementia and has consulted with hospitals and nursing homes related to caring for people with dementia.
Barbara has served on the Board of Directors of the Senior Foundation of Lincoln and the National Gerontological Nursing Association. Currently she co-chairs a task force to revise the American Nurses' scope of practice standards of gerontological nursing.
She is a member of the honorary, Sigma Theta Tau, the American and Nebraska Nurses Association, and the National Gerontological Nursing Association. Barbara's nursing practice is grounded in nursing research. She generously shares her expertise and gentle wisdom to the benefit of her clients and colleagues.
First a "diploma nurse," Barbara graduated from Mercy Hospital in Scranton, PA. She holds both a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia and a PhD from the University of Nebraska Lincoln.
Barbara is the mother of two adult children. She enjoys traveling with her husband George and spending time with her granddaughters, Samantha, a Montessori student at Prairie Hill Learning Center and Leilia, the newest grandbaby. Barbara enjoys learning new things, gardening, reading, and strives to get in 10000 steps a day.
Kimm Nelson-Tyrrell is a Consultant and Care Manager with Nebraska Nursing Consultants. She also offers Health ‘n Home Nurse service. She is based in Lincoln.
With over a decade of valuable experience in rehabilitation nursing as well as home health nursing, Kimm now brings that expertise to her NNC clients. In her practice she has guided clients and their families working through serious illnesses and injuries. She has education and experience caring for people with stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, and multiple sclerosis. She is also proficient in providing nursing care to people who are ventilator-dependent. Her clients are people of all ages, pediatric to geriatric.
Kimm has strong case management skills. She works closely with family members, caregivers, physicians, and other health care providers so that her clients can attain maximum function and optimal health.
With a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Union College, an Associate Degree in Nursing from Southeast Community College and years of broad clinical experience, Kimm Nelson-Tyrrell is well prepared to provide creative and independent nursing care with Nebraska Nursing Consultants.
Kimm and her family seek out adventurous travel. Healthy cooking is her passion. She enjoys spending time with her husband, two teenaged daughters, extended family and friends. One day Kimm hopes to provide health care for people in developing countries.
Mary L. Tines, RN, BSN
Mary L. Tines, RN, BSN is a foot care specialist with Nebraska Nursing Consultants's Feet First program. She is based in Lincoln.
Mary's career pathway includes both nursing and in education which means NNC is doubly blessed. We in nursing recognize that much of nursing involves teaching. Mary holds an Associate Degree in Nursing from the University of Nebraska Medical Center where she received the "Nurse of the Year" award. Her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree is from Nebraska Wesleyan University where she was inducted into the honorary society, Alpha Sigma Lamda.
Mary's education background developed from her Bachelor of Arts in Theology and Elementary Education degree (with Honors) from Immaculata College in Pennsylvania. In addition, she has a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics Education, K-12 (with Honors), also from Immaculata. She has taught both elementary and high school students.
Besides being a Registered Nurse, Mary is a Certified Diet Wellness Coach and a Parish Nurse.
A "seasoned" RN, Mary's nursing practice includes experience in family physician offices, oncology nursing, rehabilitation nursing and care of people with developmental disabilities. She is a keen advocate for preventive health and has focused on the relationship of diet to wellness. Her work as a health coach is a perfect fit with her nursing. As a health coarch Mary helps people to develop a healthy balance within their own genetic background for a lifetime of good health. Health coaching has her constantly researching new and better ideas in preventive health care, manageable exercise and weight loss.
Mary fully believes that a person feels better if their feet feel good. She has been well-trained in the care and comfort of the foot. Monitoring and careful foot care is essential for people who have diabetes, poor circulation to their feet, or limited feeling in their feet. It can also be helpful for people whose vision, flexibility or arm strength is limited. Mary's clients really like the relaxing foot massage that comes after feet are soaked, nails are trimmed and callouses are smoothed. Mary's first priority is family. She has a wonderful husband and three young children who keep her life on the go. Mary is active in her children's school and in providing retreats for engaged couples in her church. She also enjoys flower gardening, sewing, reading and a good cup of coffee with friend.

Sonja Simpson, RN, MSN

Sonja Simpson, RN, MSN is taking appointments for Consultation, Care Management and Health ‘n Home Nurse services in the Grand Island-Hastings-Kearney area.
Sonja’s nursing career is wonderfully varied. She has practiced staff nursing in hospitals and in public health. In Grand Island she serves as a parish nurse, and was Executive Director of the Central Nebraska District Health Department.
Sonja has held administrative positions with the Fla. Dept. of Health and Rehabilitative Services including Program Director for Children’s Medical Services. She has experience as a chief nurse executive at several large medical centers including the 800 bed Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn and Community Memorial Hospital in Toms River, NJ where she supervised the implementation of home health and hospice programs.
She has also served as Executive Director of the Minnesota Nurses Association and of the American Holistic Nurses Association. Her leadership roles highlight her excellent communication skills. She is an innovative nurse who enjoys a challenge whether in administration or in helping clients problem-solve.
Sonja is certified in Integrative Aromatherapy. She is a member of the Alliance of International Aromatherapists and the American Holistic Nurses Association. She is also a member of the nursing honorary, Sigma Theta Tau and Health Ministries.
A registered nurse for over 45 years, Sonja has a Bachelor of Nursing from Syracuse University in Syracuse NY and a Masters of Science in Nursing from University of Florida Gainesville.
Sonja enjoys music, yoga, walking, flowers and interesting conversations. She’s committed to the concept of holistic health and lives it every day!
Mary Ann Apfel, RN, CIC

Mary Ann Apfel is taking appointments for Consultation, Care Management, Home ‘n Health Nurse, and Feet First services in the Grand Island-Hastings-Kearney area.
Mary Ann’s career began with hospital nursing in both Hastings and Grand Island. Early on her focus was medical and surgical nursing. She was a staff nurse, a head nurse and evening supervisor. She has also worked in intensive care nursing. These years of experience lead to a level of expertise that her clients appreciate.
Mary Ann is commissioned as a Stephen Minister. She is a seasoned nurse who has served as an informal in-home care manager for many people—advocating for them, helping with medications and monitoring health and safety. She has invaluable nursing wisdom.
Mary Ann has been a nurse for over 45 years. She graduated from Mary Lanning School of Nursing and attended Kearney State College. For 25 years, Mary Ann practiced as an Infection Control Coordinator and has been certified in Infection Control from 1984 to the present. Mary Ann held elective office in the Greater Omaha Association of Professionals in Infection Control, is nurse liaison for the Nebraska Infection Control Network and has served as an infection control educator for home health and nursing homes in the area.
Mary Ann fully believes that a person feels better if their feet feel good. She has been well-trained in the care and comfort of the foot. Monitoring and careful foot care is essential for people who have diabetes, poor circulation to their feet, or limited feeling in their feet. Roxanne Mostek, RN, CCM, CLNC

Roxanne is taking appointments with Nebraska Nursing Consultants. Roxanne offers Consultation, Care Management, Health ‘n Home Nurse, and Feet First services in the Grand Island-Hastings-Kearney area.
A nurse for over 30 years, Roxanne is a parish nurse, a nursing home nurse and a member of the Board of Merrick County, Central District Health Department. She has also practiced in hospitals, home health, dialysis nursing, case management and ergonomics. The depth and diversity of her nursing experience is a clear benefit to her clients.
Roxanne graduated from NE Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Omaha. She is a Certified Case Manager and is a member of the Case Management Society of America. She is also Certified as a Legal Nurse Consultant and holds membership in the National Alliance of Certified Legal Nurse Consultants.
Roxanne has also practiced as a care manager in Workers Compensation cases for 12 years. She consults with nursing homes to promote optimal nursing care for nursing home residents. As a bedside nurse and a consultant, Roxanne knows long term care. This experience highlights her expertise in helping people to recover and reach optimal function. These skills and talents provide a solid framework for her private practice.
